Could an EMDR Intensive be right for me?
Some people come to therapy because they want to feel better. Others come because they want to feel like themselves again.
A lot of people arrive in therapy after years of trying to make sense of their own experiences — reading the books, listening to the podcasts, doing the courses, building the coping strategies. All of that can genuinely help. But sometimes you still feel stuck in the same patterns, even once you understand exactly why they're there.
An EMDR Intensive is a different way of doing the work. Instead of the usual weekly-session model, it carves out focused, dedicated time to actually process what's been holding you back — rather than picking at it in fifty-minute increments over months.
For a lot of people, it feels like hitting pause on life long enough to actually focus on themselves.
What is an EMDR Intensive?
It combines Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) with longer sessions, delivered over a short, concentrated period.
Because the sessions are close together, we don't lose momentum re-explaining where we left off each week — we just keep going.
At New Tracks Psychology, that typically looks like:
Three two-hour sessions across one week
A treatment plan built around you
EMDR and Resource Therapy interventions
Follow-up support once the intensive wraps up
Who Might This Help?
An intensive might be worth considering if you:
Have been through trauma, adversity or a difficult life event
Feel stuck in the same emotional, behavioural or relationship patterns
Understand your struggles intellectually but still feel them
Deal with anxiety, shame, self-criticism or low self-worth
Notice reactions that feel bigger than the situation warrants
Feel held back by the past
Have one specific goal you want to work through
Live rurally or somewhere regular therapy isn't easily accessible
Have limited time due to work, travel or family
Are simply ready to prioritise your own healing
A lot of clients describe it as: “I've spent years surviving. I'm ready to actually heal now.”
Why do people choose an intensive?
There's no single right way to do therapy. Some people prefer weekly sessions; others find a concentrated block works better. Interestingly, research shows no real difference in outcomes between the two — but the drop-out rate for weekly therapy is much higher than for intensives.
People often choose an intensive because they:
Want meaningful change sooner rather than later
Are tired of stop-start therapy
Don't have access to specialised trauma therapy locally
Prefer to fully immerse in the process
Want dedicated time just for themselves
Are travelling in from rural or remote areas
Many describe it as finally giving their nervous system enough space to actually do the work.
Is an Intensive right for everyone?
Not always. Sometimes weekly therapy is the better fit. Sometimes more preparation is needed before diving into intensive trauma work.
Part of our early conversations is figuring out together whether an intensive is likely to be helpful, safe and appropriate for you. If I think another approach would serve you better, I'll tell you — honestly and directly.
Investment & Booking Information
An EMDR Intensive is a genuine investment in your healing and wellbeing.
The total cost of the EMDR Intensive Package is $2,100, which includes:
Three 2-hour intensive therapy sessions
Personalised preparation and treatment planning
A comprehensive EMDR Intensive Workbook to support your preparation, reflection and integration throughout the process
Outcome measures before and after the intensive
Between-session support as required
One 50-minute follow-up session approximately 2–3 weeks after the intensive
Many clients find that the concentrated nature of an intensive allows them to make significant progress in a shorter period than is possible through traditional weekly therapy.
Booking Requirements…
To secure your intensive appointment dates, a 50% deposit ($1,500) is required within seven days of booking. This deposit reserves dedicated clinical time and is therefore non-refundable.
The remaining balance is due seven days before your first intensive session. Payment plans can be arranged prior to the commencement of your intensive if required.
Medicare Rebates…
If you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan and Medicare sessions available, Medicare rebates may be claimed for eligible sessions included within the intensive.
These rebates will be processed following each eligible appointment and paid directly into the bank account linked to your Medicare account. If you're unsure whether you're eligible for Medicare rebates, just ask.
